Two motors, one winter duty — how a BM4 auger drive and a BMM spinner drive keep a dump-body spreader laying salt evenly in sub-zero, high-contamination conditions.

A salt spreader has two hydraulic jobs, not one. A floor auger meters de-icing material from the hopper to the rear while a spinner disc broadcasts it across the lane — both running outdoors, cold-started, and exposed to corrosive brine and grit for hours at partial load. Orbital motors suit both because they put high starting torque at low speed directly on the shaft, mounting straight onto the auger stub and spinner hub with no gearbox.
Matching the motor to each function
- Auger conveyor — BM4. The auger moves a dense, variable granular load and needs steady low-speed torque, so the larger-displacement BM4 drives it directly and holds the spread rate as hopper load changes.
- Spinner disc — BMM. The spinner needs a consistent mid-range speed to keep an even broadcast pattern; the compact BMM delivers it in the smallest footprint at the rear of the body.
- Built for winter service. Cycloid orbital construction tolerates cold starts and contamination, and corrosion-protected shaft seals stand up to brine spray and washdown.
